Chapter Seven

Golf Commentary

Like golf, mindfulness is a game of navigating obstacles—and returning to the fairway.

Golf entails playing a ball, in as few graceful swings as possible, from certain starting places, with various clubs suited to the nature of the distance that the ball needs to travel, into a succession of shallow holes hewn into the ground at varying distances from the starting places. Although golf courses may be created in any large park, their original home is the links, or land found by the seashore in Scotland, which is the birthplace of the sport.1 The short turf, sandy subsoil, and many other natural obstacles in these locations supply conditions essential to the proper pursuit of the game.

Eighteen is the usual number of holes in a golf course. These holes tend to be arranged in ways that lend mild variety and interest to golfers as they proceed from one hole to the next. As a general rule, the distance from the starting place to the hole itself should not be much shorter than one hundred yards, or longer than five hundred yards.

For each hole there is a starting place. The starting place for the first hole is situated near the end of the final hole, for purposes of convenience. The starting place for each subsequent hole after the first hole is situated near the end of the hole previously played, but in such a position that people playing the subsequent hole will be out of the line of sight of those playing the previous hole. Meanwhile, the putting green is composed of smooth grass covering an area of approximately twenty yards all around the hole.2 Although the putting green is smooth, it may not always be flat.

Note that there are often various features that include ditches, hedges, sand formations (called bunkers), and other assorted items between the starting position and the putting green. Golfers proceed by playing their respective balls into the open spaces and good turf between each of these obstacles on the way to reaching the putting green.

On average, two amateur golfers can play a typical course within a span of three to five hours. An extra fifty to one hundred minutes should be added for each additional player, depending on his or her level of ability, the course length, and whether or not players decide to drive their cart to the clubhouse during the game to enjoy a leisurely lunch or snack. Lulls such as this can easily add an extra ninety or so minutes to any game.

The most common method of playing golf is known as standard play. During this type of game, players begin at the first hole’s starting position, where the ball is placed on a slight elevation, usually a smidgen of sand or a small wooden peg. There is then a coin toss to determine who swings first. The person who wins the toss retains the honor of swinging first throughout the game until the other player wins a hole, at which time the
